How Finished Are You?

One of Shop Your Wardrobe’s phenomenal faculty is Imogen Lamport.  Imogen is one stylish lady and not only does she know how to pull her own look together, she knows how to show us how to as well.

Imogen is the author of a fabulous blog (Inside Out Style) and of four (4) books on everything to do with style and looking (and feeling) fabulous.

Imogen’s latest book is The Finishing Touch: perfecting the art of accessorizing.

The basic premise of The Finishing Touch is that your outfit isn’t done until you accessorize.  Or as Olympic Dukakis quipped in Steel Magnolias – “the only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize!”.  So many life lessons in one movie, huh?

I asked Imogen some questions about The Finishing Touch recently. Here’s what she had to say:

What’s so important about accessorising?

Accessories provide the interest to your outfit and tie your whole look together.  They can create exciting detail when clothes are simple or plain and they can add personality to your look.  With changes of accessories you can wear the same basic clothes over and over but people think you have a much larger wardrobe as you are sporting different looks.   I like to think of your clothes as a cake and your accessories as the icing!

What are the typical mistakes that many women make when accessorising?

The most common mistake I see is when people haven’t got a full length mirror and so they never see their outfit as a whole.  They will then wear the same shoes with everything, and those shoes are letting the outfit down as a whole.  So wearing a high vamp ‘trouser shoe’ with a skirt or dress is pretty common.

If you had just one tip for women in completing their outfits with accessories, what would it be?

After you get dressed, stand in front of a full length mirror.  Close your eyes for 3 seconds then open them. What is the first thing you see?  That’s your ‘focal point’.  If you don’t really notice anything, then maybe you don’t have a defined focal point – use accessories to create a focal point directing the gaze to where you choose for people to look.  It’s a great way to distract from a body part your less happy with and draw attention to either your face or a body part you do like.  Got a great waist?  Define it with a belt.   Got a large bust?  Wear large scale necklaces to draw attention up and away.  Feel like you have a boyish figure?  Wear lots of bracelets to draw attention to your wrists and hands and create some detail.

      Hi Jill!

Thanks so much for sharing Imogen with us!

Quite recently I started to play more with accessories and have fun with them. But often I still forget. Her guide will be just the thing to give me the push I need to remember to find my “focal point” (love that tip!).

I also love the film Steel Magnolias and plan to watch it again for more life lessons!

Thanks again for this fun and informative post!
